Free Art Classes at Schuler Arts for Families, Kids, Teens, and Adults

The Albion Recreation Department in collaboration with Schuler Arts Creativity Retreat Center is pleased to invite the public to attend free art classes. All classes are taught by locally recognized professional artists: Nobel Schuler, Bobbie Ban Eck, Jerome Washington, Sabine LeDieu, Craig Bishop, Pete Williams, and Maureen Reed. The Art Connect Project is a Calhoun Country arts initiative made possible by the Battle Creek Community Foundation. 

Classes listed below are offered on Saturday, October 8 at 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, 2:00-4:00 PM, and 6:00-8:00 PM. Registration is required at http://albion.recdesk.com.

  • Basics of Drawing: This class will explore fundamental elements of drawing and design and will incorporate a variety of art papers, drawing surfaces and tools. participants will learn techniques of rendering shape, form and shadows. The instructor will demonstrate his personal approach to figure and portrait drawing and students will leave the session with helpful suggestions and simple ways to continue drawing at home.
  • Sculpture and the Art of Creative Thinking: Using a variety of commonly found objects each student will create a sculpture. Exercises in creative and alternative thought will help students to approach the materials with the intent to create. The instructor will guide participants in the manipulation of materials while keeping an eye to the principles of design. Students will create small scale individual sculptures.
  • Play with Clay: This two hour pottery experience will introduce participants to the basic skills of working with clay. Simple hand-building techniques and the potter's wheel will be demonstrated. No previous experience is required and the lesson will include all the clay and tools you'll need. Created work will be bisque fired so participants can have them later.
  • Glass Fusing: Explore the art of fusing glass to create a beautiful jewelry pendent or unique ornament. Learn how to design, cut, nip and join glass elements together during this popular 2 hour workshop. Don't worry if you have never worked with glass, Bobbie will lead you successfully through every step. Family groups are welcome, however, this class is not designed for small children.
