2016 Big Read Leader Biographies

Carl Bates, 9th grade What are some of your favorite memories from the Big Read Summer Leadership Program?: "My favorite memories were the fun activities we had that helped build our big read group relationship. Before the start I didn't have a good relationship with everyone--now I do." Carl says, "The food is great, but the program is even better. It's a wonderful experience and anyone will be honored to join and participate."

Emmylou Roberts Christensen, 8th grade What is something you learned about "Fahrenheit 451," Guy Montag, or reading in general?: "I learned that we are much more complicated than others can see and even than we ourselves can see." Emmylou adds, "I learned that even though I don't see my friends as much, we can still stay together, and we are still as close as we used to be."

I didn't know how interesting books can be. I gained the love for books and knowledge.

Cassie Porter, 10th grade What are some of your favorite memories from the Big Read Summer Leadership Program?: I really enjoyed the final art project that we did during the week of training. I liked it not only because it was an art project but also because we all had to work together to make our individual panels coincide with one another to make one large image. It helped work not only on our leadership skills but our teamwork skills. What is something you learned about yourself since participating in the Big Read?: I learned that I really enjoy discussions even when I am not participating. It is nice to see how a discussion can make its own directions.
